How does the tie break Olympic Gymnastics work?

I was watching the gymnastics and 2 gold medals were decided separately due to the 'tie-break system. Rings and vault. Both competitors had the same exact score, but you get gold, silver from others. It decides on score above the highest rating, the greater difficulty or higher performance? Why not go back to see who wins?

Gymnastics used to give duplicate medals at the Olympics. In a bit of irony, Liukin's father has one of his gold medals at the 1988 Olympics after tying teammate Vladimir Artemov on high bar. However, the International Olympic Committee, told the FIG to stop sharing medals after the Games Atlanta, and a playoff system was implemented in 1997. It's a complicated formula, based on deductions from the execution mark and involves more math the SAT. Even Liukin was not quite sure how the tie broken – and that was after someone explained it. The short answer is that He Kexin had .033 less in deductions when you apply the second tie-breaker formula. For the long answer, take a pencil and scratch paper. He and Liukin both finished with 16,725. Had Identical 7.7 start values (the measure of the difficulty of a routine), and each had a 9.025 for execution after the highest and lowest marks of the six judges were dismissed. The execution mark is based on the scale of Perfect 10, and the playoff first take the average of the four deductions that counted. He and Liukin is still tied after that. For the second tiebreaker, the three most deductions that are averaged into account. Once done, he had 933 in deductions and Liukin had .966. Understood?
